Route 2: Arribes del Duero to Salamanca Wine Route

Toro – Zamora – Arribes del Duero (Fermoselle) – Ledesma - Salamanca

1. Ciudad de Toro

Views of the Toro City Toro wines are usually powerful. The Tinta de Toro is the grape used here, which is similar to Tempranillo used in Rioja or Tinta del país used in Ribera del Duero. In this region (which gives name to the appellation Toro) the wines acquire a distinctive flavor and color. This medieval city is very representative of the history of Castilla león as Toro was the province’s capital Turing the middle ages. Lots of monuments remind the visitor of its past splendor.

2. Ciudad de Zamora

zamora city Following the Duero river we arrive at Zamora, the present capital of this province. It is worth visiting its historical district and some of its monuments such as the Romanesque church of Santa María la Nueva, which dates back to the XI century, or the Cathedral, also of Romanesque style and whose dome has become the symbol of Zamora.

3. Fermoselle - Arribes de Duero

On the way to Fermoselle we arrive at the natural park of Arribes del Duero, which runs through Zamora, Salamanca and Portugal. There are impressive canyons where it is possible to observe protected bird species. Miguel de Unamuno, one of Spain’s most relevant philosophers and writers loved this area. The winery Hacienda Unamuno and its hotel are an ideal place to stay whilst visiting the natural park around the reservoir of Almendra.

4. Ledesma

Ledesma, Salamanca Ledesma, 35 km west of Salamanca, has a remarkable historical district, including the City Hall, the Main square, the hospital and the medieval walls. In its surroundings there are 2 Romanesque bridges and a Spa. Before arriving in Salamanca, 12 km from the city, we discover Hacienda Zorita, a privilegiated state at the riverside of the Tormes.

4. Salamanca
