Route 2: Monasteries and passion for wine

Logroño – Fuenmayor - Nájera - San Millán de la Cogolla - Santo Domingo de la Calzada - Logroño

1. Logroño

View of Logroño, Rioja You will enter the city of Logrono on St James’ way via a stone bridge over the river Ebro. In the old quarter you will admire the gothic cathedral of Santa María de Palacio and other symbolic buildings such as the Palacio de los Chapiteles (a palace), the cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda and the City Hall.
We have already developped other aspects of Logono in wine route 1.

2. Fuenmayor

Vintage in Fuenmayor, Rioja 10 km away from Logrono, along the river Ebro, lies Fuenmayor. Its most remarkable buildings are the Church of Santa Maria and the Renaissance Palace. Fuenmayor is a quiet village and it is a good transition between the city of Logrono and the rural world. Besides, there are spectacular old vineyards surrounding the village. One of the most beautiful ones is Viña Lanciano (see picture), located in a meander of the river Ebro, in el Cortijo. Following our route via the N-232, you can stop to visit Bodegas LAN who own this vineyard.

3. Nájera

View of Nájera, Rioja Najera is of historical significance because it used to be the King of Navarra’s court, and during the Middle Ages it was a key city to supervise Rioja Alta. One of its mani monuments is the Monastery of Santa María la Real which has been declared National Monument. On your way to San Millan you will be surrounded by vineyards and wineries, such as the David Moreno winery in the village of Badaran.

4. San Millán de la Cogolla

Vista de San Millán de la Cogolla This town has been declared Patrimony of the Humanity. Although it is not part of St James way many pilgrims stop there to wander round its streets. You must not leave without visiting the Monasteries of Suso and Yuso which are of great historical importance: it is the place where you can find the first writings in the castilian (Spanish) language in the Glosas Emilianenses.

5. Santo Domingo de la Calzada

Vista de Santo Domingo de la Calzada Its bridge was built to enable the passage of pilgrims on St James way. You will discover this charming village by wandering round its old district and the plaza del Santo (Saint square). We recommend you visit the Cathedral San Salvador, the Convent of San Francisco, and the Cister Monastery.
