A selection of hotels in wineries in Medoc
Bordeaux has probably the highest reputation among all wine regions in the world. There are many historical reasons that can explain this reputation, and the quality of some of its legendary wines is of course on top of those.
The best well-known and highly reputed wines in Bordeaux are however only a very small group compared to the overall production in the region.
Tasting & enjoying... in Medoc
To explain what Medoc is and means we need to start first with Bordeaux, which is split in 2 parts or Banks: the Left Bank and the Right Bank. You can think of City of Bordeaux as the start of a long Estuary (the Gironde Estuary) formed by 2 rivers: Dordogne and Garonne. The Left Bank of Bordeaux refers to the vineyards which are West of the Garonne river, whereas the Right Bank is North-East of the Dordogne.
Medoc is part of the Left Bank. Saint Emilion is part of the Right Bank. Both sides are Bordeaux, but the soil is so different that it is very easy to identify the difference between wines produced in one or the other Bank once your nose and taste get used to wines from each side. Gravel predominates in Medoc and Cabernet Sauvignon grows well in gravel. This is why the wines of Medoc are so powerful and can age for so long (a quality that has made them so famous).
Understanding Medoc
But Medoc is not just Medoc…. (would it not be too easy?) Within medoc there are very important differences, not only based on communes, but also, of course, on producers. Haut Medoc is the most important part of Medoc in terms of wine production, and in Haut Medoc we find 4 famous communes: St Estephe, Pauillac, St. Julien and Margaux.
All these names are an integral part of the history of Bordeaux and French wines in general, and during your stay at one of the wine hotels we propose in Medoc, you will be able to enjoy this land and by visiting some of the wineries here, understand how the prestige of the brands is maintained generation after generation. You will have to pay attention therefore not only to the brand, but also to the Commune where the wines are produced. All wines produced in some of the communes mentioned are expensive, though they can become “really” expensive if they were classified….
The famous 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines implied a system to define the specific quality of wines in Bordeaux. At the time 61 wines were included in the list, not many if we consider the enormous amount of producers in Bordeaux, and those 61 wines were divided in 5 grades. The top 5 wines of 1er Cru Classe were and are: Lafite, Latour, Margaux, Haut-Brion and Mouton-Rothschild (brought up to this level in 1973 from being 2e cru Classe) At that time of 1855 no wines from Saint Emilion were included, so 100 laters later Saint Emilion also came up with their own system... From your wine hotel you will be able to visit the different famous communes in Medoc. We do also recommend that you take your time to walk in the vineyards, touch the ground and smell it, to see if you can then taste the “ terroir” inside the wine… Enjoy the experience!
