Tasting & enjoying wine in South Africa
South Africa is an amazing touristic destination. It offers many options and diversity: amazing beaches or inland Safaris at Kruger which rival with Tanzania or Kenya. South Africa is also increasingly a wine touristic destination. Wineries are usually located in fantastic areas, and a visit to wine country in South Africa can be a “perfect match” with a Safari or beach holiday in South Africa.
Understanding wine in South Africa
Wines in South Africa belong of course to the group of New World wines. Production here has long history, and the first wines produced in South Africa were fortified and very much appreciated in Europe during the eighteenth century. South African wines always had a good market in the Netherlands due to the historical connection between both countries.
We propose you wine hotels in nearly all main South African wine producing regions. Constatia is the oldest wine region in the country, and fortified wine originated from here, and was name after the region. Stellenbosch is the country´s main wine region, followed by Paarl. The properties we recommend offer good value for money in each of these regions, as well as proximity to vineyard and wine production. During your stay you will be able to discover wines made using Pinotage, which is a local variety.
Pinotage was created crossing both Pinot Noir and Cinsaut. These 2 grape varieties originated in France. Pinot Noir is subtle whilts Cinsaut, which has its origin in the Rhone valley, produces powerful wines. So what is pinotage like? Depending on the producer and the specific area it can produce from mid to full bodied wines, which are a first candidate to “drink local” during your stay in South Africa. Despite this, Chenin Blanc (locally named Steen) is the most planted grape and it is used to produce all sorts of white wines from dry to sweet. Cabernet and Merlot can also be found in South Africa, and there are many interesting wines using these grape varieties. It is alo important to mention that South Africa has paid lots of attention to eco-production, and a good number of wineries follow ecological practices to produce their wines.
